SCHOOL DEMOGRAPHIC INFORMATION

Ulysses S. Grant High School is located on 34 acres in the community of Valley Glen, California (formerly Van Nuys) at Oxnard Street and Coldwater Canyon in the San Fernando Valley. It is a middle-to lower-middle income area of single homes and apartments. The school was established in 1959 as part of the Los Angeles Unified School District. Grant High School is a ninth-to twelfth-grade comprehensive high school with an enrollment of just under 3000 students in the residential school. In addition, 390 students attend the Communication Technology Magnet. Ten to fifteen percent of Grant High School students receive Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) and about 71.2% qualify for free or reduced priced Federal meals.

Members of the student body come from over 61 different countries and approximately 41 home languages are spoken. Over the past 10 years, the school has changed from a predominantly middle class, White student population to a predominantly lower-middle class Hispanic student population. The school's student population is very diverse, drawing students from the local communities of North Hollywood, Sherman Oaks, Van Nuys and Valley Glen. The 2001-2002 ethnic analysis survey shows the multi-ethnicity of the student body, with 53% Hispanic, 35% white (15% of the White students are Armenian), 5% Asian or Pacific Islander, 5% Black, and 2% Filipino. Twenty-eight percent of the students are identified as limited proficient speakers; the majority of these are Spanish speakers. Of these, 162 were in the structured English immersion program and 140 were in Advanced ESL 3/4. Approximately 17% of these students were redesignated in 2000/2001.

The combined residential and magnet high schools have identified 300 gifted students. About 287 students were enrolled in AP Classes and 579 students were enrolled in Honors classes in 2001-2002.

The number of Special Education students in the residential school has nearly doubled in size in the last four years. There are 18 Special Education teachers. Thirteen (13) teachers serve 137 students in Special Day classes (SDC) and five teachers provide service to 131 students in the Resource Specialist Program (RSP). Grant High School also provides instructional services to identified Visually Impaired students.

Grant High School has many special programs to enhance student achievement. These programs include Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), Perkins Tech Prep, Humanitas, English Language Learner (ELL), Gifted and Talented Education (GATE), Communications and Technology Magnet, and School for Advanced Studies (SAS).

There are presently 142 certified classroom teachers. Ninety-seven teachers are have permanent status, 12 are probationary, 11 are provisional, 2 are district interns, and 21 hold emergency credentials. Nine teachers hold BCC/BCLAD credentials, 30 teachers hold LDS/CLAD credentials, and 18 teachers hold SB 1969 certification.

In 1997, the school was no longer eligible for PHBAO (Predominantly Hispanic, Black, and Other minority students) status, when the percentage of white students to minority students exceeded 30%. Consequently, the school experienced a loss of funding which had provided additional faculty and counseling staff positions, and special parent/teacher conference time. One result was an increase in class size.

Grant High School successfully completed the school accreditation process "Focus On Learning" in the Spring of 2001. Focus on Learning was designed to help all stakeholders clarify the school's mission and accomplish and develop measurements, which indicate the degree to which success is being achieved. Through this process we reviewed (1) how the school was organized for student learning, (2) the effectiveness of our instructional and curriculum program, (3) support for student personal and academic growth and (4) resource management and development. As a result of the evidence provided to the visiting committee, Grant High School was awarded a six-year term of accreditation with a three-year review.
