Safety Reminders during rainy weather

We want to remind our Grant Community to follow safe practices during the inclement weather. Flooding is a threat to life and property that can occur any time of year. Conditions that cause floods include heavy storms or steady rain for several hours or days that saturate the ground. However, flash floods occur suddenly due to rapidly rising water along a stream or low-lying area.

A mere 6 inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult. It takes just 12 inches of rushing
water to carry away a small car, while 2 feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles. It is NEVER
safe to drive or walk into flood waters.

  • Allow extra time to get to school during wet weather.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and changing weather conditions. Know where you can go to get
out of the rain if necessary.
  • Walk in a group for safety.
  • STAY AWAY FROM FLOOD CONTROL CHANNELS. Flood channels are also very slippery and steep,
making it hard to get out.
  • NEVER ATTEMPT to cross flooded areas and never enter moving water.
  • Be aware that debris may also be floating in flooded waters and can be very dangerous.
School is one of the safest places to be during an emergency. If you have any questions or concerns,
our office hours are 7:30am - 4:00pm.  You're welcome to give us a call or drop by.  Alternately, send me an email anytime @ [email protected].
