Goodbye Survey in Google Classroom

Goodbye Survey

Hello everyone, this is your last assignment. It is a short survey. You will find the link in Schoology in the Attendance assignment for 6/5-6/12. I would post it here... but I need you to click into Schoology for attendance, so it is there. If you are in two of my classes, you will only need to complete the survey once.

You do not need to turn in anything for this assignment on Google Classroom.

Thank you.

Final Portfolio (Website) in Google Classroom

Final Portfolio (Website)

We are finally ready for our last "real" project - the Final Portfolio. This is a website to be presented to Professor Mossman at LAVC, in order to earn your college credit (up to 9 units!).

You will use Google sites and optionally, Google Slides to create your portfolio. It is simple compared to what you have been doing, but you do need to be organized and follow a lot of little steps.

I made very detailed instructions for you, divided into Part 1 and Part 2, along with 5 (five!) instructional videos which are linked in the instructions, and an entire (fake) website to serve as an example. I've posted a direct link to all the videos in one place, for quick reference as well as the sample site.

There is a lot of reading, but just take it one step at a time and you will get through it with an amazing website.

You will have almost two weeks to create your website. I suggest that you do as much as you can in the 1st week so that you have time to reach out to me if you need help.

This project is due on a Wednesday (NOT Friday). This is to give us a little extra emergency fixing time before I send your portfolios to Professor Mossman on May 29th.

If anyone needs help converting files to make them web-ready, because you don't have Photoshop or Illustrator installed, LET ME KNOW, ASAP. I will convert files for you. Email me so that we can make arrangements to share the files.

*** Edit 5/25/20: You will need to change your sharing permissions on all PDF and Google Slideshows. See the last link attachment for a how-to-video about this.

Exhibit Catalogue: Kurt Schwitters in Google Classroom

Exhibit Catalogue: Kurt Schwitters

After all of our preparation, this is where you finally get to start designing your 24-Page Exhibit book about the artist Kurt Schwitters. We will take two weeks (yes!) to do this.

By the end of week 1 (Friday 5/8), you should turn in your first draft. This should have all of the images and text included, but perhaps not completely arranged and beautified. This is a working draft... just turn in what you have so I can see what you are doing and give you some pointers if you are going the wrong direction. Turn in your draft, here, as a PDF with printer spreads. In the directions you will see links to previous video demos on how to do this... and also how to package your file for the 2nd week.

By the end of week 2 (Friday 5/15), you should be finished with your document. I may give you minor suggestions to tweak or fix before using in your portfolio... however, you should be done with the project at the end of the second week. See the directions on how to turn in the final design (in two formats).

Edit: I'm adding a screenshot of the download window for the book template. Google may try to confuse you with a list of files you didn't know were there.... just ignore that list and hit the download button in the upper right corner.

Watch the video for full instructions (It's the last attachment, below). When watching the video, please note... I did figure out how to flip the video - so it is right-reading, not backwards as I mentioned in the video. Also, I reformatted the directions document to only show the steps that you need for this week.

Use remaining attachments for reference. Use Flipgrid to turn in your work.

This week we will begin preparing for our final, college credit project: the Kurt Schwitters book. Please read the attached directions to learn about Schwitters and what you will create this week. Please note that in addition to turning in your drawings here (take a picture), on Google Classroom - we will also begin using Flipgrid. Flipgrid is a website where you can share videos about your work so that the rest of the class can see and comment. You must use your school email to sign into Flipgrid. Details are in the attached directions.

Another Edit: Spring break is over... hopefully you have all had a chance to get InDesign up and running on your computers. This week, our goal is to finish up this project. The main thing to concentrate on is ALIGNMENT. Make sure all of your columns of text, your images, captions, etc., line up to something. Once you turn in your PDFs, I will go over them and give you final adjustments/ corrections to make before we save the final, portfolio version. (I will also give you another project next week - so get this one as perfect as you can this week).

Edit: The critique videos are now attached. Please watch ALL of them for your revisions. I am so sorry for the briefness - I am using the free version of Screencastify and I don't have enough time in each video to say everything that needs to be said. Just know, that these were all really good - my critiques are to make them even better so that they can be in your portfolio.

You can use any media for this assignment. You can create it digitally... in Illustrator or Photoshop. Or you can even use paper and paint or collage or whatever works for you. When finished upload your digital files or photos of your artwork.

Although this is called "4 square", you are only creating 3 original pieces. The first one is by some other artist. The other three are by you.

Competition: Packaging in Google Classroom

Competition: Packaging

For this assignment, you will enter the annual PIASC Package Competition by creating a box design for perfume or cologne. Use your logo design (from the last project) as the company logo, on this box. Follow the guidelines given on the PIASC flyer.

Outline of steps to follow:

1) Think about your logo and how it can translate into a perfume or cologne brand. What would the box look like? Review the e-book Packaging and Dielines - especially sections 2 and 3 (rigid boxes and folding boxes). Find three boxes to try out.

2) Open the e-book pdf in Illustrator - choose the page number of the box you want. Print, cut and assemble the boxes. Which one do you like best?

3) Print out another copy or two of your chosen box. Sketch design ideas onto it and assemble. Recreate your sketch in Illustrator or Photoshop. Print and assemble your design once in a while to see how the design is developing in 3D.

4) Add your insert pattern (from previous project) to the inside of the box. You can do this with two sided printing.

5) Eventually, you will need to turn in digital files an assembled box and a flat print of the box design. In class instructions will be given for printing and assembling the final box prototype and for contest submittal.

Patterns - for your brand packaging in Google Classroom

Patterns - for your brand packaging

Learning Objective: To learn how to make patterns while maintaining brand alignment.

In an upcoming packaging project, you will need a pattern to print onto an insert (It will decorate the inside of a box). This exercise will help you do that.

1) To start, make a new Illustrator file measuring 17" x11" (horizontal, tabloid size) with a print resolution of 300. Paste in a copy of your vector logo.

2) Create 4 variations by changing the colors or arrangement, or by separating out details. Shrink the logos to prepare for pattern making (They'll need to be small).

3) Follow the video tutorial to learn how to create and modify a pattern swatch. Create a different pattern for each logo variation.

4) Put each pattern into it's own rectangle and arrange your layout to clearly show which logo variation created which pattern. See example for layout.
Note: You will need to enlarge the original logos again so that the layout is clear.

5) Turn in your illustrator (.ai) file.
